British Navy Deck Watch with Decimal Dial
A rare British Navy deck watch with decimal dial. A large 'staybrite' case with screw down front and back. A silvered dial with inner hour and minute dials in a highly legible red and blue colour scheme. The outer dial indicated from 0-10, is designed to be read in 1/100ths of minutes. A high quality mechanism, which was used in other deck watches such as the HS4. Numbered to the back 0552/521-0243 above the broad arrow and 694.
Below is an excerpt from 'A concise guide to Military timepieces 1880-1990' by Z M Wesolowski.
'These watches were supplied to the Royal Navy in 1942 and are fitted with a high quality 15 jewel movement and centre seconds hand. After the war the deck watches went into storage at the Chronometer section of the Hydrographic Department at Hermonceaux Castle there during the 1950's they had their enamel dials replaced with special decimal dials using smaller hour and minute hands. the dial layout gives emphasis to minutes, which are picked out in red on the intermediate chapter ring and an outer ring has been calibrated to indicate 100 units per minute. These watches were particularly useful for rapid mathematical calculations.'
