Balaklava, Russian Document 1849/50 Russian   Handwritten Emblem of the Two Headed Eagle
Official Hand Written Russia Document found in the home of a Russian Official from Balaklava. The document is dated 1849/50.
The Document has the Official Franking of the Double Headed Eagle - Emblem of the Russian Empire. The Handmade paper has the same double Headed Eagle Watermark (measuring 28 cms x 32 cms). You can make out the Watermark in the above scans.
The Double Headed Eagle Symbol was used by Ancient Persia, The Holy Roman Empire, The Byzantine Empire, The Venetian Republic. However, is most notably regarded as the Symbol of the Russian Empire. The Symbol was adopted by the Russian Tsars as their own. The first appearance of the Double Headed Eagle in Russia,is believed to be in the 15th Century. The Eagle's two heads represent East & West. The Horseman in the centre is thought to be St. George.
Balaklava is famous for the Crimean War of 1853-1856. During the Siege of Sevastopol, Baklava was the base of the British army's 'Charge of the Light Brigade'
Russia Invaded Hungary in the Hungarian Revolt of 1848. A time when Europe was at a turning point in its policital history.
