Antique Wm Ehrhardt silver pocket watch and chain
An antique silver pocket watch, William Ehrhardt, with albert.
The watch has a key-wound movement which is working nicely. The movement is protected by an inner fitted cover.
The watch itself measures 55mm diameter excluding the stem and the loop. The case is silver and there are hallmarks inside the two case backs for Birmingham 1898, with a maker's mark for William Ehrhardt.
William Ehrhardt (1831-1897) was born in Germany, and served a watch making apprenticeship there before moving to England in 1851.
After working for a while with a London watchmaker, Ehrhardt set up a watch making factory in Birmingham. His aim was to make watches by using machinery as opposed to traditional watch makers.
When William Ehrhardt died in 1897, just a year before this particular watch was produced, his sons William and Gustav Victor carried on the business. By this time the company was producing some 500 watches per week.
The company continued to trade until 1924 so was in fact one of the last English watch manufacturers. By 1926, Gustav Victor was listed as a watch repairer rather than a manufacturer.
Back to our particular watch, the case is in good condition for such an early piece, just minor marking and a little unevenness to the back. There was originally engine turned detail to the back but most of this has worn off over the years.
The watch glass has a few marks but nothing too serious at all.
The dial is in good condition. One of the hands appears to be a later replacement.
The watch comes with a double albert, with each chain measuring 22cm long including the T-bar and the clasp. The T-bar is actually formed from an adjustable watch key, although we are including two normal keys as they are easier to use. Each of the links has the silver lion mark.
The watch and chain will be sent in a new presentation box. ALL PRICES INCLUDE UK POSTAGE (excluding Northern Ireland).
Please contact us before placing international orders so that we can advise of shipping prices and to see if customs regulations allow us to post watches to your country.
The international buyer is responsible for paying any import duties and taxes.
All of our watches are checked over before listing, and are also checked for accuracy which is usually within around +/- two to three minutes over 24 hours (unless otherwise stated), which is considered respectable for a vintage watch.
We are a VAT registered company and all purchases are covered by Consumer Regulations.
Credit / debit card purchases can be made over the telephone on 01386 750238 or you can proceed via the \'Buy Securely\' button on each listing page.
We are an on-line only business and do not have facilities for callers. Our offices are open from Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.
With regards to appraisals / valuations, we receive a huge number of information requests each day and unfortunately do not have the manpower to deal with them all individually. Our advice would be to contact a local auctioneer for a full appraisal.
