Antique Swiss silver Cortébert pocket watch
Antique Swiss silver Cortébert pocket watch, circa 1910s/20s.
Cortébert was founded by Abraham-Louis Juillard when he opened his small watch making store in Cortébert village in Switzerland in 1790. However, the company was not registered until 1855 when it went under the name of Manfaktur Raiguel Julliard et Cie. The company traded successfully although it was taken under the umbrella of other companies but eventually it suffered with the advent of quartz watches, as did many Swiss watch making companies. The Cortébert name is now owned by an Italian company known as Perseo.
This particular watch has a stem-winding movement, calibre 477, which is working nicely. It is stamped with the initials JC which probably relates to the name Julliard et Cie. The movement is protected by an inner hinged cover.
The watch measures 49.5mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop. The case is 800 silver and there are Swiss hallmarks, including the grouse mark, inside the case back. The case has light surface marks from use but overall it is in nice condition.
The watch lens is plastic and is in nice condition.
The white enamel dial has a logo possibly the retailers. The dial has a faint hairline crack although it can only be seen through a jewellers loupe but otherwise it is in nice condition.
The watch has its original gold coloured hands and a later sub second hand although antique.
The watch comes in a new presentation box.
