Antique silver Waltham Royal pocket watch
Antique silver Waltham Royal pocket watch, 1901.
The watch has a 17-jewel stem-winding movement, Royal grade, which is working nicely. This is a good quality movement with Breguet hairspring for enhanced precision, screw-set jewels with gold settings, and a Church 1892 patent regulator. The movement is fully signed and it has the serial number 11,066,766 which dates it back to 1901.
The movement is protected by an inner hinged cover which has some fairly gentle unevenness.
The watch measures 50mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop. The case is silver and there are hallmarks inside the back covers for Birmingham 1912 with a maker’s mark for Aaron Dennison. The Dennison Watch Case Company made most of the cases for Waltham UK. The front and sides of the case are in good condition. The hinged case back, with engine turned detail and vacant cartouche, has some unevenness.
There is a discrepancy between the date of the movement and the hallmarks on the case. However there is no sign of the movement being replaced, no scar damage, which suggests either old stock was being cased by Dennisons, or the movement was swapped for an identical grade in the case of a repair.
The watch glass is in good condition.
The signed dial has blued steel hands, a subsidiary sunken dial and outer minute markers. There is a short faint hairline just by number 12 but it is faint.
The watch comes in a new presentation box.
