Antique silver Waltham pocket watch, 1871
Antique silver Waltham pocket watch, 1871.
The watch has a key-wound movement, WWCo grade, which is workng nicely. The movement is fully signed and the serial number 541091 dates it back to 1871/72. This grade was produced in relatively low numbers for Waltham with just 62,000 being produced between 1866 and 1878.
The movement is also stamped with the words, ‘Foggs Patent’… this relates to the patent safety pinion designed by Charles Fogg, designed to limit damage caused by a broken mainspring.
The movement is protected by an inner hinged cover.
The watch measures 54mm diameter excluding the stem and the loop. The case is sterling silver and it is in very nice condition for such an early piece. There are light surface marks and rubbing to the engine turned detail on the back of the watch but overall it is very acceptable indeed.
The inside of the case back has the name of a previous owner engraved, W Kellett, Burnley.
The watch glass has a few small marks but again, very acceptable.
The watch dial is signed American Watch Co. The American Watch Company was formed in 1859 by the merging of two watch manufacturing companies, the Waltham Improvement Company and Appleton Tracy & Co. In 1885, the company name changed to the American Waltham Watch Company and by 1906 it became the Waltham Watch Company. The dial is in very nice condition.
The watch will be sent in a new presentation box. ALL PRICES INCLUDE UK POSTAGE (excluding Northern Ireland).
Please contact us before placing international orders so that we can advise of shipping prices and to see if customs regulations allow us to post watches to your country.
The international buyer is responsible for paying any import duties and taxes.
All of our watches are checked over before listing, and are also checked for accuracy which is usually within around +/- two to three minutes over 24 hours (unless otherwise stated), which is considered respectable for a vintage watch.
We are a VAT registered company and all purchases are covered by Consumer Regulations.
Credit / debit card purchases can be made over the telephone on 01386 750238 or you can proceed via the \'Buy Securely\' button on each listing page.
We are an on-line only business and do not have facilities for callers. Our offices are open from Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.
With regards to appraisals / valuations, we receive a huge number of information requests each day and unfortunately do not have the manpower to deal with them all individually. Our advice would be to contact a local auctioneer for a full appraisal.
