Antique silver Longines wrist watch, 1924
Antique silver Longines wrist watch, 1924.
The watch has a Longines 13.34 hand-winding movement which is working nicely. The calibre was first introduced in 1910 and originally had 15 jewels, this is the 18 jewel version with three extra jewels (one for the centre wheel top pivot and two cap jewels for the escape wheel). The movement is signed both with the Longines name and also with the Baume & Co mark, importers of Longines watches to UK and the Commonwealth.
The watch measures 35mm diameter excluding the winding crown and the articulated lugs. The case is silver and there are hallmarks inside the case back for London (import mark), 1924 with an importer's mark for Arthur Baume of Baume & Co. The back of the watch has a little unevenness and the odd small mark, nothing serious and overall good condition for such an early piece.
The case is very much in the style of Francois Borgel who designed early waterproof and dustproof cases although, as with any vintage watch, it should be kept away from water and moisture.
The watch glass has some light marking but very acceptable.
The dial is in good condition, just a little marking to the subsidiary seconds dial. Pin-set hands.
A later leather strap has been fitted.
