Antique Silver Dial Fusee Pocket Watch, 1872.
Exquisite, mid-Victorian open-faced silver fusee pocket watch, by watchmaker James Shaw, of South Street, Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Leicestershire. Born 1835, in Leicester, Shaw served his apprentiship in the city of his birth, before eventually setting-up his own business in the small county town of Ashby-de-la-Zouch, before moving back to Leicester c1875.
Hallmarked London 1872, this high-quality watch has a silver dial with central machine turned Guilloché pattern and a subsidiary second’s dial. Blued hands, Gothic style raised gold numerals, gold garlanded ring, and hand-crafted gold and silver floral decoration, the dial then protected by its original lunette glass. The case maker was John William Hammon (“Ih”), of Clerkenwell, London.
The fusee movement numbered “9488” has a Shaw signed backplate with engraved Coventry made Star Mark of quality, with silver balance and diamond end stone.
The watch comes securely packed with a winding key, together with instructions on how to wind and set the watch time.
