Antique Paul Buhre gun metal pocket watch
Antique Paul Buhre gun metal pocket watch.
The watch has a good quality stem-winding movement which is working nicely. The movement is protected by an inner hinged cover upon which are the words ПАВЕЪ БУРЕ ПОСТАВЩИКЪ ДВОРА ЕГО ВЕЛИЧЕСТВА which roughly translates as Paul Buhre, official supplier of the Imperial Court, this meant that he was also permitted to use the state coat of arms as seen here. Holders of the title of Official Supplier of the Imperial Court were required to participate in all provincial exhibitions organised by the Ministry of Finance for eight years, and to remain free of customer complaints. In the case of this particular watch, there is some marking to this inner cover from where it has been opened in the past.
Pavel Buhre was one of the first watch companies in Europe. The company was founded by a Russian business man of German descent, Karl Buhre. The company was originally based in St Petersburg and in 1874 Pavel Buhre bought a factory in Le Locle, Switzerland. He received orders from the Imperial Court to for watches which were to be presented by the emperor to officials for distinguished public service, foreign diplomats and prominent figures of culture. Buhre watches were also given as bonuses to officers and non-commissioned officers in the Russian army.
Pavel Buhre watches were awarded top prizes at many national and international exhibitions, including silver and gold medals at World’s Fairs in Paris in 1889 and 1900.
This particular watch measures 52mm diameter excluding the winding crown and the loop. The case is gun metal and it is in good condition. The case back has beautiful rose gold detail, possibly initials but difficult to decipher.
The watch glass is in good condition.
The white enamel dial is signed Павелъ Буре (Paul Buhre) and it is in good condition with just one short faint hairline beneath the subsidiary seconds dial. Blued steel pin-set hands and an outer minute track.
The watch will be sent in a new presentation box. ALL PRICES INCLUDE UK POSTAGE (excluding Northern Ireland).
Please contact us before placing international orders so that we can advise of shipping prices and to see if customs regulations allow us to post watches to your country.
The international buyer is responsible for paying any import duties and taxes.
All of our watches are checked over before listing, and are also checked for accuracy which is usually within around +/- two to three minutes over 24 hours (unless otherwise stated), which is considered respectable for a vintage watch.
We are a VAT registered company and all purchases are covered by Consumer Regulations.
Credit / debit card purchases can be made over the telephone on 01386 750238 or you can proceed via the \'Buy Securely\' button on each listing page.
We are an on-line only business and do not have facilities for callers. Our offices are open from Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.
With regards to appraisals / valuations, we receive a huge number of information requests each day and unfortunately do not have the manpower to deal with them all individually. Our advice would be to contact a local auctioneer for a full appraisal.
