Antique English Watch Co pocket watch, 1883
An antique silver pocket watch from the English Watch Company, 1883.
In 1874, William Bragge bought the Anglo-American Watch Company from Aaron Dennison. He traded for several years before handing the business over to his son Robert in 1883, the year this particular watch was made.
The business continued to trade until 1895 when competition from Swiss watch manufacturers saw the company go into voluntary liquidation.
This particular watch has a key-wound movement which is working nicely. The movement is protected by an inner fitted cover. Both the movement and the case have the numbers 56542.
The watch itself measures 48mm diameter excluding the stem and the loop. The case is silver and there are hallmarks inside the two case backs
for Birmingham 1883 with two maker’s marks, one for the English Watch Company and the other for Robert Bragge of the English Watch Company, a Birmingham based company with two branches. The number 56542 is also on both of the back covers so we can be absolutely sure that the movement, cover and case started off life together. Overall the case is in good condition, just a couple of “dings” to the back cover and some rubbing to the engine turned detail.
The acrylic lens is in good condition.
The enamel dial is in good condition. If viewed through a magnifying loupe, there is one very faint short hairline through number 8.
The watch will be sent in a new presentation box. ALL PRICES INCLUDE UK POSTAGE (excluding Northern Ireland).
Please contact us before placing international orders so that we can advise of shipping prices and to see if customs regulations allow us to post watches to your country.
The international buyer is responsible for paying any import duties and taxes.
All of our watches are checked over before listing, and are also checked for accuracy which is usually within around +/- two to three minutes over 24 hours (unless otherwise stated), which is considered respectable for a vintage watch.
We are a VAT registered company and all purchases are covered by Consumer Regulations.
Credit / debit card purchases can be made over the telephone on 01386 750238 or you can proceed via the \'Buy Securely\' button on each listing page.
We are an on-line only business and do not have facilities for callers. Our offices are open from Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.
With regards to appraisals / valuations, we receive a huge number of information requests each day and unfortunately do not have the manpower to deal with them all individually. Our advice would be to contact a local auctioneer for a full appraisal.
