Antique English Tea Caddy by Asser & Sherwin c1860
A sensational caddy by top-notch Victorian retailer, Asser & Sherwin, a signature can be found on the hinge with the addresses "81 Strand & 69 Oxford St. ".
Asser & Sherwin were high class or luxury retailers, operating from premises in The Strand, London, and later Oxford Street. In the Victorian period, The Strand was known for its cluster of up-market retailers selling 'fancies', works of art and high quality goods to the upper and upper middle classes. In 1860, Charles Sheppard Sherwin (1833-1872) formed a partnership with his cousin, James Asser (1836-1924) and they traded under the name "Asser & Sherwin" until 1882.
This eight sided box with it's elegant domed lid, is made from a stunning example of top quality Burl Walnut, really my very favourite timber, with it's glorious grain and rich cognac colouring.
The box has the most exquisite fine quality cast brass fittings intricately engraved and hinged handles to each side. The top mount is finished with a large Wedgwood Jasperware plaque with a classical scene of a Lady and Gentleman.
The lid lifts to reveal a two compartment interior, each with a lid again with magnificent brass mounts one engraved "Black" tea and one "Green" tea. The two teas would be blended to taste before being added to a pot and the custom tea made.
A real gem for the discerning collector, in excellent condition, the footprint measures 10 1/4" x 6 3/4" and stands 6 1/4" tall.
