Antique English Hand Painted Playing Card Box
A fabulous Victorian papier mache playing card box with a beautifully shaped lid with the most exquisite hand painted Newfoundland dog after Landseer's "A Distinguished Member of the Humane Society", an 1831 oil on canvas work by English painter, Sir Edwin Henry Landseer. The painting is in exquisite condition.
The dog in the painting is meant to be "Bob", a dog that was found in a shipwreck off the coast of England. The dog found his way to the London waterfront where he became known for saving people from drowning, a total of twenty–three times over the course of fourteen years. For this, he was made a distinguished member of the Royal Humane Society, granting him a medal and access to food.
The box retains the original paper lining on the interior. There are two (later) packs of playing cards and two Bezique markers and a Bezique playing guide.
Dating to the mid-nineteenth century, the box remains in excellent condition. 7" x 5 1/4" x 2" tall.
