A wonderful pair of antique Edwardian framed Vanity Fair Spy military prints dating from 1901 & 1910. In vintage frames, these antique prints are a great way to bring a little satirical humour to your wall.

Vanity Fair was a weekly magazine published in Britain from 1868 to 1914 and offered a satirical take on Victorian and Edwardian society, publishing articles on fashion, current events and the latest scandals. A full-page colour lithograph caricature of a contemporary celebrity or dignitary appeared in most issues, and it is for these caricatures that Vanity Fair is best known today. These prints are by Leslie Ward known as “Spy” or sometimes “Drawl”. Sir Leslie Matthew Ward was a British portrait artist and caricaturist who over four decades painted 1,325 portraits which were produced as watercolours and then turned into chromolithographs for publication in the magazine.

This pair includes:

“4th Division”, A caricature portrait of General Sir Neville Gerald Lyttelton, a British Army officer from the Lyttelton family who served in the Anglo-Egyptian War and took part in the relief of Ladysmith during the Boer War. Published on September 5th 1901 in Vanity Fair. By artist Leslie Ward “Spy”.

“Field Marshall Earl Roberts”, A caricature portrait of Frederick Sleigh Roberts, a British general who became one of the most successful British military commanders of his time. Published on 1st February 1910 Vanity Fair a supplement to The World. By artist Leslie Ward “Spy”.
