Antique Desk-Top Boulle Compendium c.1860
A wonderful and rare little antique Boulle desk-top compendium made from Boulle, (brass set into Tortoiseshell).
The tortoiseshell was attached to the hardwood frame with coloured matter below (in this case red) to give this highly sought after reddish-orange colouring to these works of art. This process first developed by the French cabinetmaker, André-Charles Boulle (11 November 1642 – 28 February 1732, highly popular in nineteenth century Britain.
This dome-topped box has a brass finial to the top and once opens reveals a miniature leather skiver or writing surface, as in a lap desk or writing slope this small surface is clearly not for writing as it is too small.
Once the lid is opened the little pin releases the concealed drawer below (the drawer cannot be opened when the lid is closed. The fitted drawer has a sloped postage stamp compartment and another Boulle lidded compartment which would have contained sealing wax and perhaps a small seal.
A magnificent and very rare box in superb condition. 3 7/8" x 2 1/2" x 2 1/4" tall.
