Antique Coventry silver pocket watch, 1901 pocket watch watch watches %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
An antique Coventry silver pocket watch, 1901.

The watch has a key-wound movement which is working nicely. The movement is signed with the mark for the Coventry Watch Movement Company, and it is all protected by an inner fitted cover.

The Coventry Watch Movement Company was formed In February of 1889 as a rival to the Lancashire Watch Company. It consisted of a number of small watch making concerns. Despite several changes of policy and direction, the company struggled financially for the first few years of trading. This was down to several reasons, lack of support by some of the smaller suppliers and small orders, some as small as ten pieces, … shortly afterwards, a minimum order of 500 was implemented.

By 1907, the company were making parts for electrical apparatus and bicycles, and by 1912 the watch making part of the factory accounted for just a third of the production line. By 1915, the company was dedicated to supporting the war effort and there is little evidence of any watches being made at all. By 1919, Cycle & Motor Cycle manufacturers Trade Association and watchmaking becomes a thing of the past.

This particular watch measures 50mm diameter excluding the stem and the loop. The case is silver and there are hallmarks inside the two case backs for Chester 1901 with a case maker’s mark for Ward & Francis, the Coventry based case makers. The case is in good condition. The back has a cartouche with initials, possibly JB. The inner cover has a couple of scratches around the key hole.

The watch glass has minor marks but is very acceptable.

The dial is in beautiful condition.

The watch will be sent in a new presentation box.
