Antique Columbus full hunter pocket watch, 1890
Antique Columbus full hunter pocket watch.
In 1874, the Columbus Watch Company was founded by Dietrich Gruen who went on to later become one of the founders of the Gruen Watch Company.
In 1882, the company was able to move to the “German Village” in Columbus following major investment by a number of different parties. It was here they started to manufacture their own movements, having previously bought them in, and they also developed a smaller thinner 16-size movement.
This particular watch has a stem-winding movement, model 3, which is working nicely. The movement is signed and it has the serial number 187693 which dates it back to 1890. In fact, just four years after this watch was made, the company went into receivership but continued to trade under new names, and in 1903 the company was bought by Studebakers and became the newly formed South Bend Watch Company.
The movement is protected by an inner hinged cover.
The watch measures 54mm excluding the winding stem and the loop. The case is 14k gold filled and it is exquisitely detailed on both the front and the back. The front cover has a cartouche with a faint letter B while the case back has an image of a building with a bell tower against a backdrop of mountains. It is in beautiful condition.
The winding crown pushes in to open the front cover. Inside there is a glass lens which is in good condition, just a small nibble at the bottom. The signed white enamel dial has stylised Roman numerals, a subsidiary seconds dial and an outer minute track. There are a couple of short faint hairline cracks next to the subsidiary seconds dial but nothing too detrimental at all. The hands are initially lever set, it is very easy but instructions will be sent with the watch. ALL PRICES INCLUDE UK POSTAGE (excluding Northern Ireland).
Please contact us before placing international orders so that we can advise of shipping prices and to see if customs regulations allow us to post watches to your country.
The international buyer is responsible for paying any import duties and taxes.
All of our watches are checked over before listing, and are also checked for accuracy which is usually within around +/- two to three minutes over 24 hours (unless otherwise stated), which is considered respectable for a vintage watch.
We are a VAT registered company and all purchases are covered by Consumer Regulations.
Credit / debit card purchases can be made over the telephone on 01386 750238 or you can proceed via the \'Buy Securely\' button on each listing page.
We are an on-line only business and do not have facilities for callers. Our offices are open from Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.
With regards to appraisals / valuations, we receive a huge number of information requests each day and unfortunately do not have the manpower to deal with them all individually. Our advice would be to contact a local auctioneer for a full appraisal.
