Antique Carved Oak Box CARVED OAK BOX %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
Magnificent carved oak box/tea caddy incorporating flemish carved panels from the 17th century. Inside the box there are 3 labels giving a brief history of the component parts of the box. Description as follows. The top inside and the four inside sides of this box or tea chest are made from the panelling of the room in fotheringay castle in which the unfortunate mary queen of scots was beheaded, february 8, 1587. The bottom of the box is a part of the door of the celebrated star chamber at westminster. For the genuineness of these woods, read sir charles liptrop's letter to william plamer, esq, of tavistock street, covent garden, also till's book, page 102, strype's letter to bowditch, and adamson's account to me which is my possession. C. Matthews
