Antique Automated Novelty Cigar Box / Humidor
An absolutely stunning antique French cigar box, better than most of it's kind and most of all, brings a smile to my face each time I see it.
The window houses the most adoratble bronze dog sporting a hat and a pair of goggles, the plaque above the door "Parlez Au Portier" means "Talk To The Doorman".
The front door is surrounded by gilded bronze grape vine. The chain between the door and the window is pulled which then releases the lid revealing the fitted cigar humidor, not a humidor as such as these are modern inventions which regulate the humidity in present day boxes, this is really classified as a cigar box.
At the same time the lid opens, the front door opens to reveal a match holder or vesta on the inside of the door, this would have been filled with non-safety matches which would have been struck on the strike sitting to the front on top of the Ebonised plinth.
Dating to around 1900, the box remains in excellent condition. The base measures 8 1/2" x 6 3/4" x 7 3/4" tall at rear.
