Antique silver Stauffer & Co hunter pocket watch.
Antique silver Stauffer & Co hunter pocket watch.
The watch has a Swiss 15 jewel stem-winding movement, signed with the Stauffer & Co logo, which is working nicely.
Stauffer Son & Co manufactured movements in their Swiss factory in La Chaux de Fonds, known as the Atlas factory. Sales were so good that the Atlas factory struggled to meet the demand so movements were imported from other Swiss manufacturers such as IWC, Eterna and Patek Philippe.
This particular movement was made in the La Chaux-de-Fonds factory as it has the SS&Co beneath three triangles. This mark was used on Stauffer’s own highest quality movements, known as “third quality” (which, despite how it sounds, was their very best quality). The movement is working nicely and it is protected by an inner hinged cover.
The mark of SS&Co with the three triangles was registered in 1886 and this particular watch would date back to the 1930s.
The watch measures 50.5mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop. The case is silver and there are hallmarks inside the three covers for Birmingham 1934 together with a case maker’s mark for the Dennison Watch Case Company.
The case is in nice condition with only mild marking and a few small “dings to the back. The front cover has a glass lens surrounded black enamel numeral which are in nice condition. The small lens has some surface scratching from use.
The winding crown pushes in to open the front cover. Inside, there is a glass lens which is in good condition.
The dial is in lovely condition with blued steel hands, including the special half hunter hour hand so that the time can be read when the front cover is closed.
The watch comes in an antique presentation box.
ALL PRICES INCLUDE UK POSTAGE (excluding Northern Ireland).
