Antique 1919 Swiss silver pocket watch
Antique 1919 Swiss silver pocket watch.
The watch has a jewelled Swiss stem-winding movement which is working well. The movement is protected by an inner hinged cover which has some surface scratching and a small "ding".
The watch itself measures 48mm diameter excluding the winding crown and the stem. The case is silver and there are silver hallmarks inside the two case backs for London (import mark), 1919 with an importer's mark for Arthur George Rendell. The case has some small "dings" / surface marking although it is in nice condition for such an early piece. Initials have been scratched into the cartouche although they look just like scratches.
In 1907, an act came into force which meant that all imported watches had to be assayed in a UK assay office and marked with British import hallmarks. For this, a sponsor's mark was required. In this particular case, Arthur Rendell was an employee, and probably in charge, of the department that handled imported watches at a company called Pringles, the UK's largest wholesalers of antique jewellery, silverware, antique clocks and watches, so it was deemed relevant to use his initials.
The watch glass is in nice condition.
The white enamel dial has a couple of very faint hairline cracks but otherwise it is in nice condition. Pin-set blued steel hands, a subsidiary seconds dial and an outer minute track.
The watch comes in a new presentation box.
