Antique 1884 Fusee Chronograph Pocket Watch.
A fine fusee chronograph pocket watch, by watchmaker Robert Davies & Son of 30 High Street, Blaenau Ffestiniog, Gwynedd, Wales, where this watch would have been assembled.
Born 1821, into a wealthy land-owning family in Caernarvon, Wales, Robert Davies served his horological apprentiship under Arthur Bryers, of Eastgate Street Row, Chester, sponsored by his father Davies (Sr).
By 1841, Davies had set-up his own watchmaking business in Blaenau Ffestiniog and by 1871, had been joined by his son Richard Joseph Davies. (Richard been born in the town in 1852 and served his apprentiship under his father). Hence the business became known as ‘Robert Davies & Son’, by which time the pair were still trading from 30 High Street, yet now as “watchmakers and jewellers.”
Hallmarked London 1884, this silver chronograph was designed and handmade without a stop/start slide button on its side but having a removeable ‘snap-shut’ bezel to its front, making it unusual and significantly different to the standard chronograph model of the day! The watches unique specification, also includes a single gold hinge, and a white enamelled dial with gold main hands and a blued, sweep centre seconds hand. The watch has both Roman hour numerals and smaller 0-300 chronograph scale Arabic numerals.
The signed Davies & Son fusee movement, has a three-quarter plate, compensated balance, and ruby end stone, the case being made by famous case and watchmakers Rotherham & Sons, (“JR”), of Spon Street, Coventry. The case and movement serial numbers being the same, “61849.
The watch comes securely packed with a winding key, together with instructions on how to wind and set the watch time.
Note: This watch does not come with a chain or fob. If you require a silver chain/fob from our large stock, please contact us for advice.
