Andre Gignac 1866-1956 French Oil Canvas Seascape
This is a large, impressive seascape oil on canvas by the French artist Andre Gignac, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner. The painting depicts a view of the sea on a summer day, with puffy white clouds in the sky and a large wave about to crash onto the shore. The water in the foreground is being sucked back from the beach towards the wave.
Andre Gignac was born in Paris in 1866 and specialised in seascapes in oils. Although we did find a rather beautiful and touching portrait of a young Jewish girl, who sadly perished in the Holocaust, which he painted in about 1920, an art deco portrait of a dancer and a landscape. He died in Rijswijk in the south of The Netherlands in 1956. Although we have been unable to find any further biographical information about him, the majority of his auction results were from Belgium and The Netherlands, so we presume that he lived there for some while.
The painting has been newly framed in a 2 1/4" solid gilt frame. It will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
Image size: 39" x 23 1/4" - 99cm x 59cm
Frame size: 43 5/8" x 28" - 110.8cm x 71.1cm
Medium: Oils on canvas
Condition: Very good. The surface is clean and taut and there is no craquelure, paint loss, or stretcher marks. The frame is new.
