An antique Doxa pocket watch with chain
An antique Doxa pocket watch with chain.
Doxa (Georges Ducommun, Fabriques Doxa) was founded in 1889 in Le Locle, Switzerland. Mr Ducommun was well respected in the horological world and in the 1920s was elected vice president of the International Horology Group and president of the Swiss Horology Association at the International Exhibit of the Decorative Arts in Paris. In 1936 control of the company was taken over by his son-in-law Jacques Nardin, grandson of Ulysse Nardin, the famous watchmaker. The company was very successful and, from the 1960s, concentrated their efforts on producing divers watches.
This particular watch has a stem-winding movement which is working nicely. It is signed with the Doxa name and is protected by an inner hinged cover which has details of trade medals won in 1905/6.
The watch itself measures 50mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop. The case is made of argentan which is sometimes known as 'German Silver', an alloy of nickel, copper and zinc finished to look like silver. The inside of the case back is also signed with the Doxa name. The case is in good condition with just one mark to the bezel, nothing too serious, and a little gentle unevenness to the hinged back.
The acrylic lens is in good condition.
The signed white enamel dial has a small chip to the very edge between 10 and 11, mostly covered by the bezel, and a little faint damage between 4 and 5, barely noticeable to the naked eye.
The watch comes with a single chain of unusual form, which measures 30cm long including the clasps.
The watch will be sent in a new presentation box. ALL PRICES INCLUDE UK POSTAGE (excluding Northern Ireland).
Please contact us before placing international orders so that we can advise of shipping prices and to see if customs regulations allow us to post watches to your country.
The international buyer is responsible for paying any import duties and taxes.
All of our watches are checked over before listing, and are also checked for accuracy which is usually within around +/- two to three minutes over 24 hours (unless otherwise stated), which is considered respectable for a vintage watch.
We are a VAT registered company and all purchases are covered by Consumer Regulations.
Credit / debit card purchases can be made over the telephone on 01386 750238 or you can proceed via the \'Buy Securely\' button on each listing page.
We are an on-line only business and do not have facilities for callers. Our offices are open from Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.
With regards to appraisals / valuations, we receive a huge number of information requests each day and unfortunately do not have the manpower to deal with them all individually. Our advice would be to contact a local auctioneer for a full appraisal.
