American Folk Art Cane New England 17th Century
An important early American piece of history.
Probably most appreciated and recognised by collectors of early American folk art. Certainly a museum piece.
Purchased by myself from a colleague who personally purchased it from a dealer that had brought it back from New England America.
Having enjoyed doing significant research on it I can confidently confirm all that I was told about the cane!
The cane has English & American inclinations supporting it association with New England & the Pilgrims.
The cane dates to the 1600 - 1700's.
The decoration is synonymous of early American styles.
The coif worn by the woman is typical of the style worn.
I'm advised that the wood is of an American variety.
It has a very Lutheran style, and (it has been suggested) in some ways that it relates to the Witches of Salem trials which were in the late 17th Century.
The previous owner had made contact with an American auction house that was keen to market the piece within a specialised folk art sale. There had been a significant sum suggested regarding it's value.
It is a wonderful piece of history.
Measuring exactly 36 inches in length, perhaps another connection to it's English connections.
