Alan Peters Aluminium and Teak Designer Table
Sorry, this item is now sold. If you are seeking similar, feel free to contact me with your requirements. Thank you.
Offered here is a rare and striking table by one of the most important and highly regarded antique furniture designer/makers of the 20th century, Alan Peters (1933 - 2009).
This table dates from c.1975 - a time when Alan Peters was producing experimental pieces and incorporating polished metals into his designs.
It is signed to the underside, as shown.
The circular top of this table has been made from 12 pieces of perfectly mitered teak, each carefully inset with a fine length of polished aluminum, creating an elegant dodecagon shape set within a perfect circle. The upper surface has also been inset with green leather whilst the aluminium column terminates seamlessly into a traditional teak, stepped tripod base.
This piece is all about innovation and attention to detail. It represents a novel fusion between earlier Arts and Crafts principals and a progressive, modernist design vision.
A good investment piece. Prices are set to climb.
More on Alan Peters -
Alan Peters OBE (17 January 1933 - 11 October 2009) was a British furniture designer maker and one of the very few direct links with the Arts and Crafts Movement, having apprenticed to Edward Barnsley. He set up his own workshop in the Sixties. He is well known for his book 'Cabinetmaking - A Professional Approach' and his revision (for the fourth edition) of Ernest Joyce's 'The Technique of Furniture Making'.
In 1990 he was awarded the OBE for his services to furniture and in 1998 he moved to Minehead in West Somerset. He was a main exponent of the seventies British Craft Revival. His work is rooted in tradition and shows a deep understanding and respect for his material wood. In 2009 fellow furniture designer maker Jeremy Broun made a film and wrote a book called "Alan Peters - The Makers' Maker". To a generation of British woodworkers in the seventies and eighties he is considered to be the greatest British furniture designer maker.
