A Large "The Spirit of Ecstasy Statue"
After Charles Robinson Sykes (1875-1950) A Nickel Sculpture , XX ( large ) on circular marble base.
Possibly used at Car Shows or car showrooms and dates between 1920-1950's
The ' Spirit of Ecstasy ' ( also known as ' Emily ' , Silver Lady ' or Flying Lady ) was modelled on Eleanor Velasco Thornton ( 1880-1915)20 1/2" highJohn Walter Edward Douglas-Scott-Montagu (second Lord Montagu of Beaulieu after 1905, a pioneer of the automobile movement, and editor of The Car magazine from 1902) had been having a long standing affair with Thornton since 1902 , Thornton was his secretary.The very first Rolls-Royce motorcars did not feature radiator mascots they simply carried the Rolls-Royce emblem. When Montagu commissioned his friend, sculptor Charles Sykes (who worked in London under the nobleman's patronage ) to sculpt a personal mascot for the bonnet of his 1909 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost, Sykes chose Thornton as his model. Rolls-Royce then adopted the mascot in 1910 as many were affixing inappropiate mascots to their cars.
In excellent condition, no cracks or damage to the figure or the marble base.
