A fine and rare barometer by John Russell, Falkirk
A fine mahogany stick barometer from this eminent instrument maker of the Georgian period. The herring bone veneered carcase is fitted with the typical oval cistern cover and glazed door, decorated with barberpole stringing. The register plates are engraved in the makers very distinctive style of engraving and fitted with a manual vernier. The moulded scroll pediment is decorated with floral paterea, which is again typical of this well documented maker(See Nicholas Goodison, English Barometers, 1680-1860 & Edwin Banfield, Stick Barometers).
Signed 'Jn. Russell, Falkirk.'
