A 1940s silver Zeno pocket watch.
A 1940s silver Zeno pocket watch.
The Zeno Watch Company was started in 1868 by Jules Godat who made silver pocket watches. The business went from strength to strength but Godat subsequently moved onto new ventures and left the company. Production then concentrated on the manufacture of railway antique clocks and watches and in 1900, the company expanded and electricity was installed to power the machines.
In 1920, André-Charles Eigeldinger took over watch production. He specialized in the manufacture of observation watches for military purposes, slide rule watches and pocket watches in silver, gold and platinum. In 1922, Eigeldinger & Söhne officially registered the Zeno brand (Zeno roughly translates as 'God given').
During the inter-war years, production was converted to wrist watches to meet the new and ever growing demand. The first Zeno wrist watches were made of gold and intended solely for export. In the following years, Zeno developed their range to also include watches for boys, nurses' pendant watches and early digital jump hour watches. Zeno watches are still be manufactured today.
This particular watch has a stem-winding movement, with 15 jewels, which is working nicely. The movement is protected by an inner hinged cover.
The watch measures 42mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop. The case is silver and has continental .925 silvermarks in the inner and outer covers. The case is in good condition with only the odd small "ding" to the back. The inner hinged cover has a later inscription, To Joan from Mum & Dad 10-12 1951.
The plastic lens is in good condition.
The dial is signed Zeno and has the retailers name Hopkins & Hopkins. The dial has a faint hairline crack between 10 & 6 o'clock but overall it is in nice condition.
The watch has its original blued steel hands.
The watch comes in a new presentation box.
ALL PRICES INCLUDE UK POSTAGE (excluding Northern Ireland).
