Queensbury mid century modern Cascade large vase
An pivotal design classic from Webb Corbett and designed by David Queensbury in 1965. This is a large cylinder vase in modern styled cut crystal. Any design scheme whether 21st or retro mid century vintage will benefit from a piece of timeless quality and innovative design.
Size: Height 26 cm with a diameter at the neck of 13 cm
David Queensberry (b.1929) was professor of Ceramics and Glass at the Royal College of Art from 1959-83. During the 1950s and 1960s he designed ceramics for the Staffordshire pottery industry and in 1966 founded his own design company, Queensbury Hunt, together with Martin Hunt (b.1942), a student and later head of Glass at the RCA.
This vase was one of a series OF luxury pieces that he created for Webb Corbett. The firm commissioned him to create a range of modern glass in 1963. using simple cylindrical vessels, he designed four geometric patterns for which he won the Duke of Edinburgh's Award for Elegant Design in 1964. A second range, designed in 1965, consisted of four further patterns, including this one, 'Cascade'. Queensberry's reworking of the traditional sparkle and intricacy of cut glass to conform to current demand for simplicity of line set a new standard of modern elegance in British cut glass ware.
This vase was one of the more expensive in the range. Its luxury status meant it carried a premium price as well as being sold in far fewer quantities than mass production, therefore now 60 years on this item is scarce if not rare to find. Condition of this one is very good, there are no chips nor cracks, there is internal evidence of use, slight water mark (these can always be polished out if desired, as they are we feel it is unnecessary to go to those lengths. Valued and priced according to condition) Buchanan and Laing Galleries are a private client business. Appointments can be made by arrangement via email.
The Company is a distance selling business and as such abides by all current HM Government consumer regulations that apply to pre-owned, second hand, antique items sold online.
We welcome purchases from all over the world, however, we do not take any responsibility or pay for import charges and taxes that non UK purchasers may accrue.
