19th.C. Sheraton Wine cooler by Freemans of Norwich
A good quality mahogany and inlaid sarcophagus shaped wine cooler. The lid with satinwood inlay between boxwood and ebony lines and a good gadrooned finial (handle). The quarter veneered front with a large oval centre outlined in boxwood and ebony chevron. The sides with satinwood banding again outlined with boxwood and ebony and oval chevron centres. The lid lifts to reveal a removable bottle holder with a replaced brass opening stay. The whole standing on an offset moulded plinth with turned feet and brass castors. Makers name stencilled below " Freemans Manufactury, St Andrews, Norwich".
The Freeman family were well known in Norwich and London from the late 18th & 19th Century. They were makers of top quality picture frames, mirrors and decorative antique furniture (see National Portrait Gallery under Freeman for more info).
In good condition with one or two bumps and bruises associated with age and use. Good patina.
