19th.c. Pharmacy Shop Sign for Burroughs Wellcome
Rare late 19th.c. pharmacy shop sign for Burroughs Wellcome & Co. London. Brass plaque in the form of a pharmacist’s mortar and pestle cast with an American eagle clutching the Union flag together with the Stars and Stripes. Presented on the original shaped walnut board. Excellent original condition.
Henry Wellcome and his friend Silas Burroughs left the US for Great Britain in 1876, establishing their company in the same year. In 1880 they began to promote the sale of their pre-made medicines in tablet form, a new concept in Britain at the time.
