19thC English Antique Duke of Wellington Snuff Box
An antique snuff box dating back to the mid 19th Century.
English origin.
Capped either end with a base metal medal commemorating the death of the British hero , The Duke of Wellington.
The upper side displays a head a shoulders portrait in relief of the Duke with the words above - "Arthur Duke of Wellington".
Below, the makers mark of "Allen and Moore, Birmingham".
Verso, a further medal in relief depicts a monument with Britannia positioned to the left, crying, with a lion lying on the ground humbly and an angel offering a crown of laurels to the right.
To the top are the words "Britannia mourns her hero now at rest". The monument states "Wellington Born May 1 1769 Died September 1852. To the bottom of the relief can be found the words "Waterloo, June 18 1815". The latter clearly celebrating the Duke's famous victory against Napoleon at the battle of Waterloo.
Condition - good - traces of snuff remain.
