19th Century Seamans Chest
A 19th century seaman’s chest dating to around 1880. It is in largely original condition with a magnificent painting of a clipper painted underneath the lid. The only alteration to the chest over its lifetime is later replacement handles to the sides. These chests were often decorated by their owners, and the painting of the ship is probably the vessel that the sailor was serving at the time he either had the chest made by the ship’s carpenter or made it himself. The style of ship depicted in the painting had largely disappeared by the end of the 1880s which dates the chest nicely.
