18th Century Scroll work Tea Caddy, Circa 1790
George III Scroll work tea caddy of hexagonal form.
The box constructed from satinwood and edged with checkered banding of ebony and box wood. Each panel decorated with gilt and coloured paper scrolls in stylised foliate/shell motifs, the front having a painting of a lady reading. The interior with its original lid retaining excellent colour, opens to reveal a coloured paper compartment.
Paper scrolling, also known as quilling, filigree, was a popular pastime for ladies during the late 18th century. In 1786-7, The New Ladies Magazine described the art as 'able to afford an amusement to the female mind'. The coloured and gilt rolled paper was arranged so that the exposed edges formed a pattern across the surface of the tea-caddy. The result was supposed to resemble gold and silver filigree metalwork.
Dimensions:
Width: 18cm
Depth: 10cm
Height: 13cm
Origin/Age: English, Circa 1790
