1877 John Dingley Stephens Vellum Will, Cornwall
#AD097: Dingley Stephens Genealogy Manuscript handwritten on Vellum
This is a large and original signed English 1877 vellum folded document for the last will of John Dingley Stephens of Henwood, in the parish of Linkinhorne, Cornwall, England. He appears to be aware he is dying soon, and leaves his 2 sons his property, money and also well cares for his beloved wife, Catharine. John wrote this will on 25 March 1877 with Peter & Son Solicitors, and was deceased by 8 June, 1877.
Henwood grew into a settlement because of its location near the Wheal Phoenix, Phoenix Mines and Cheesewring Quarries. This famous quarry supplied the granite for the Tower Bridge in London, which was built from 1886-1894.
Vellum is goat or calf skin prepared and used for writing legal documents. It does not deteriorate rapidly as paper does. It is also called skin, membrane or parchment. Johannes Gutenberg's first Bible of 1455 was printed on vellum, as well as the original copies of the 1215 Magna Carta, and both still exist in wonderful condition today. Lawyers or Solicitors used vellum as lasting documents, and they are also in use for scrolls, maps, indentures, books, codices and legal documents. Vellum was also printed on.

This is a rare and one of a kind original Victorian era antique document found in Totnes, Devon, England. There are the remnants of broken red sealing wax on the crafted tab and brass rivets in each corner. The handwritten calligraphy and script is beautifully rendered. A lovely and original Dingley, Stephens family genealogy piece, but also for the vellum collector, or those with interests in early Cornwall history.
