Description

Striking and unusual, trailed glass vase attributed to Stuart & Sons c1890. Shouldered body with pinched neck and cupped rim with tooled edge. Applied emerald green threads trailed over a clear body to create a veined effect. Applied decoration together with its overall shape making a very striking piece. Ground pontil to base with etched registered number 36652 (see notes below). The vase is 14 cm in height.
This vase is in excellent original condition with no chips, cracks or restoration. Very minor surface signs of age. Please see images as these form an important part of the description.

Design numbers were registered with the British Board of Trade for items manufactured in Britain. Rd no 36652 (etched in the same script) has been seen on two other pieces with the same emerald green trailing over a clear body. Both items with the addition of silver mounts from silversmiths based in the Birmingham area and dating to the late 19th century. It is assumed that the registered design number therefore relates to this particular pattern of applied décor over clear glass – differing from the more common spirals and “tadpoles” seen on British glass of the period. National Archives show this design number to be registered in 1846 by Hardman & Price (who produced printed textiles!). Not unknown for errors to exist in these records – also common in this period for designs to be registered by individuals/companies who then sold these to manufacturers. A number of Stuart & Sons’ pieces show registered numbers etched in the same script. The emerald green colour over clear glass also being distinctive to Stuart & Sons.
