George I Solid Silver Shellback Tablespoon. London
Description
Good, solid Hanoverian Shell-back Table Spoon with bottom-struck hallmarks for London. The shell-back is in good order, with minimal rubbing where the heel of the spoon has met the table. The lion-passant and leopard’s head are visible, and the makers mark of Edward Bennett is discernible, however the date mark has been mis-struck. The makers mark for Edward Bennett of the initials EB surmounted by a crown was registered in 1731 and was used up until 1737 at least, so it’s reasonable to suppose that this spoon dates from the 1730s.The process of striking hallmarks onto the shank often caused the stem to bulge, thus necessitating the re-hammering of the shank by the spoon maker, which can account for squashed hallmarks in bottom struck spoons. Spoons were bottom-struck until 1781, when they were hallmarked at the stem end (top-marking).
The top of the stem is engraved with the initials W & M, surmounted by S, so was probably given as a betrothal or marriage spoon.
The spoon is a good hefty weight and has a solid feel in the hand.
