This is an exquisite late Victorian / Art Nouveau inlaid mother of pearl and gold pique work hand mirror.
It is the most beautifully crafted and meticulously detailed piece I’ve ever come across.
It features a bird of paradise - or similar - on a bird bath, surrounded by flowers and vines, which extend all the way to the handle.
The mother of pearl pieces have a fabulous colour display - this is not just a mirror case, but a small artwork too.
The glass is not original to the piece - it has clearly been replaced at a later date.
A good enough fit, although not perfect.
The mirror is 27 cm long and about 7 cm at its widest point.
Condition: there is a hole and some damage to the top - as a result of the mirror replacement, I guess.
But otherwise excellent for age.
A rare find indeed.
