Antique French Walnut Empire Style Bateau Lit Bed
Description
A lovely antique walnut bed. We date this bed to the second half of the 19th century. The bed comes in four sections: the head and foot ends, and two side rails.
The panel head and footboard are of the same height with a lovely shapely top.
The bed was made for one side to sit against the wall and the outer side had all the decoration. The outer side of the head and footboards have wider ends over decorative feet with their original castors. The side rail has a lovely carved corner section raised to join the head and footboards.
The head and footboards have a height of 47.5" (121cm), they are both 50.5" (129cm) wide, the overall length is 86” (219cm), and the height to the top of the side rail is 20.5” (52cm).
The internal length is 74.5 (189cm) and width 45” (114cm)
This lovely bed remains in very good solid condition with only surface markings commensurate with age and usage. There is some minor wear and indents to some edges and the headboard has an age gap and a slight age split in the panel. The head and foot boards have some darker marks primarily to the headboard. There are a number of old worm holes that have been treated twice to make sure.
This remains a very stylish and elegant bed which will continue to provide sweet repose for many years to come.
