Description

There is no denying the quality of this 19th century Chinese export hand painted (watercolour, gouache collage laid on canvas) four fold screen. The scene depicts a procession of figures and horses in a mountainous landscape and a lady on horseback strumming a mandolin.

For a very similar screen, see that photographed in the Drawing Room, Brodick Castle in the late 19th century and early 20th century, the panels are also comparable to sets on the wall of the Chinese Room at Carton House in County Kildare, Ireland as featured in Emile de Bruijn, Chinese Wallpaper In Britain and Ireland, London, 2018, p.81-7.

Dimensions: each panel 133H x 46Wcm, with the wooden frame 142cm H.

Condition: The frame is very sturdy for it's age. There are no breaks or splits in the wood. There is some peeling to the black paint on the reverse side.
The painting itself is in original unrestored condition. There are various marks and stains.
