Description
Very large oil on canvas.Distinguished gentleman seated with letter in hand
The man is clearly someone of importance.
The painting is dated 1839 to the right hand side of the canvas.
There is writing to the letter he is holding but I have been unable to decipher what is written.
It could possibly be the artists signature.
The canvas is housed in original period gesso moulded substantial frame, which is very large and heavy, there is V.R. stamped to the reverse of the frame.
Relined canvas
Craquelure throughout canvas
Old repairs with some inpainting
All consistent with age
The very ornate frame is period and is also consistent with age has some shrinkage to gesso in places, minor losses to gesso.
