Description

A fine Chinese Canton export sewing box of octagonal form standing on gilded stylised bat feet.

The box is made of wood that has been lacquered and decorated in two tone gold oriental scenes. A tea ceremony to the top, garden scenes to the front and lids of the boxes and stylised flowers to the sides.

Contains original bone fittings of fretwork, thread boxes, clamp, thimble and many other sewing accessories.

The top compartment lifts out. The lower drawer has a hinged lid which was probably used as a surface for silk painting. The lid covers another compartment for storing sewing or writing equipment.

Condition is very good considering its age, many have not survived so well. It has both carrying handles and both locks work with an original key. There is some wear to the decoration on the top commensurate with age and use, the rest of the decoration is in very good condition.

Size 35.5cm x 26cm x 15cm

Overall a beautiful and useable antique sewing box.
