Scottish silver caddy spoon, Glasgow, 1947
Description
This scottish silver caddy spoon features a celtic design handle and has a planished finish reverse to the bowl. The inside of the bowl has been engraved "E.C.H." "Goatfell" "12/8/53".
Goat Fell is the highest mountain on the Isle of Arran.
We have found references to the "Goatfell mountain race", a race of approximately 9 miles. But in 1953 it appears to have taken place in May (it was won by Alex Breckenridge). So unless there is more than one running per year this spoon does not relate to this.
We have also found reference to the murder of Edwin Rose, whose body was found on Goatfell. but this was in 1889 so don't think this is any way related!
This spoon is fully hallmarked for Glasgow, 1947, and the makers Robert Allison.
All marks are crisp and clear.
The spoon bowl measures 3 cm (1.25") by 4 cm (1.5"). The overall length 9.5 cm (3.75"). It weighs 14g.
All measurements are approximate.
The spoon is in very good condition.
