Description

A large antique Chinese Qing Dynasty polished bronze water buffalo with two boys riding on its broad back. The larger boy holds a rope in his right hand which passes through the nostrils of the buffalo while grasping the smaller boy with his left hand.

There is significant wear including repairs in a white metal (probably lead) suggesting considerable age, and it may well be earlier than 19th century, possibly early Qing. The water buffalo is particularly well-modelled whereas the boys are more naïve in their representation.

Dimensions: Width 33 cm x Depth 17 cm x Height 24.5 cm
Weight: 4.89 kg

Condition: The lead appears to have been added later as a repair rather than being an impurity in the metal of the original casting since the markings on the rope and the larger boys hair are engraved rather than cast.
