Description

A small late 17th century or early 18th century profusely carved three panelled coffer in fine antique condition. Carved and punched decoration comprising organic and geometric shapes covers the top and front with the two panelled narrow sides remaining plain apart from some groove carving. Fleur-de lis symbols are incorporated into both the designs on the panelled lid and are framed by a pattern of repeating lunettes. The panel designs are repeated on the front albeit in a different combination. On the front they are framed by a top rail decorated with finely carved scrolls, two outer stiles with intertwined ribbons while the inner stiles and bottom rail have a more simple alternating crescent and dot carved design.

The lid opens on two iron hinges to reveal a good sized space for storage purposes. The original attractively shaped iron escutcheon is still present. There is a good length to the legs thus lifting the base well clear of the ground.

Its easy to accommodate size, panelled sides, attractive carving and good colour all help to make this coffer stand out from the crowd.
