Description

An early 20th century Ceylonese embossed bronze platter or tray of circular form with raised edge in good original condition. The design is based upon the semi-circular carved stone bases found at the threshold of an entrance or stairway in Sri Lankan Anuradhapura period temples or palaces, termed moon stones or Sandakada Pahana. The central moonstone is surrounded by a double lotus petal border, followed by concentric bands embossed with animals and plants the most decorative of which contains a procession of animals including elephants, brahman cattle, horses and lions. There is a also an inner band of a bird motif or Bherunda. There are two maker's mark stamped into the rim: one contains an animal whereas the rectangular one bears the letters KAA.
