Small Hondius Map of Russia & China, c.1616

Description
This is a small hand-coloured map of Tartaria engraved by Jodocus Hondius for his edition of Petrus Bertius's 'Tabularum Geographicarum Contractarum', published in Amsterdam in 1616. Unlike the earlier plate, this version has longitude and latitude lines. The map covers Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and large parts of modern Russia and China, with the Great Wall of China marked. At the top right corner it even includes part of Alaska. The 'Mare de Sala' is now known as the Caspian Sea but 500 years ago it was much larger than it is today and incorporated the Aral Sea and land further to the east as far as Tashkent.
