Description

This is a fine and imposing pair of baluster-shaped Japanese Meiji Period Satsuma ceramic vases each hand-decorated with immortals and an encircling dragon, circa 1910. Various features such as the haloes around each of the figure's heads are highlighted in gilt.

Each vase depicts a principal figure, a female, called Kannon Bodhisattva, the Goddess of Mercy, and she is accompanied by four disciples called 'Rakans'. Many Japanese Buddhists turn to Kannon for protection and guidance in times of need. Kannon is said to have the power to answer prayers and perform miracles, making her a beloved figure in Japanese religious culture.

The vases are signed underneath with Japanese characters and 'Made in Japan'.

Dimensions: Height 38 cm Diameter 21 cm
Weight 2.7 & 2.3 kg

Condition: The vases are in very good condition free of chips and cracks. There is some rubbing to the gilding on the rims and shoulders but there are no losses to the enamel decoration.
