Description

This is a large fine quality late 19th century Grand Tour Italian bronze of 'Seated Hermes', after the Antique, of good, almost black, patination. This figure of Hermes (also known as Mercury) is seated on a stylised rock with one hand resting on the rock, the other on his knee, wearing sandals with wings.

The bronze 'Seated Hermes' found at the Villa of the Papyri' in Herculaneum in 1758 can now be seen at The National Archaeological Museum of Naples in Italy, this figure being one of the most celebrated works of art discovered at Herculaneum and Pompeii in the 18th century.

Condition: This bronze is in excellent condition for age and is ready to go straight into a home. One of the two bolts securing the figure to the rock is lacking but it is adequately secured on the remaining bolt.
