Description

This is an imposing late 19th century Japanese bronze and champleve vase, or urn, with two dragons forming the handles. All six sides of the baluster shaped body are covered in champleve work, where vitreous enamel in various colours fill the toughs in a cast bronze surface. Champleve work can be quite crude compared to cloisonne but this is a particularly fine example with exceptional detail in the geometric and floral inspired patterns. Bands of champleve work also occur at the neck and foot of the vase. The base lacks a maker's mark.
